2017 Futsal Fiesta

The 2017 NZSS National Futsal Championships were held in Wellington at the ASB Centre this week. Island Bay United had strong representation across the board in the Girls’ and Boys’ competition.

Local derbies were replaced with new opposition from across the country, demonstrating the development of futsal in New Zealand.

With an action packed week, it all boiled down to two exciting finals with St Patrick’s College competing in the Junior and Senior finals – the juniors played Hamilton Boys High while the seniors were up against Napier Boys High.

Both games were played with intensity and skill however St Patrick’s brought their A-Games to both along with a vocal and very supportive crowd. The juniors prevailed with a tight 3-2 victory – spending the final 4 minutes with four players.

The seniors led from start to finish with Liberato Cacace bagging five pots to win convincingly 5-0 against a valliant Napier Boys High. The scoreline does not do justice to the team from Hawkes Bay but the accuracy of the St Patrick’s’ team was the key, especially with Cacace in such fine form.

Congratulations to IBU members who competed and gave it their all, especially those in the St Patrick’s College juniors and seniors.

Flames Rank Highly in Taupo

The IBU Flames squad had a great run in the national McCartney Tournament in Taupo with a second place (on goal difference) in the Girls U15 comp. An unfortunate Phoenix-like draw at the wrong stage left them needing 10 goals in the final game to come top, and they were running hot but managed 7! Well done girls.
